Technology Programs
TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS
The McKeesport Area Technology Center affords students theopportunity to develop skills in one of the technical fields and prepares themto enter a multitude of career areas. The technology programs may be selectedfor tenth grade, thus affording students the opportunity to develop skills overa three year period and the opportunity to schedule rigorous academics.
Due to the safety and the high skill level of the technicalprograms, a "drop/add" must be done in the first two weeks of school.Therefore, students are not permitted to enter a new shop at semester break,unless they have had accredited training in that area.
PROGRAM OF STUDY
The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical EducationImprovement Act of 2006 requires the development and implementation of careerand technical Programs of study (POS). Programs of Study incorporate secondaryeducation and postsecondary education elements: include coherent and rigorouscontent aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant career andtechnical content in a coordinated, non-duplicative progression of courses thatalign secondary education with postsecondary education to adequately preparestudents to succeed in dual of concurrent enrollment programs or other ways toacquire postsecondary education credits and lead to an industry-recognizedcredential or certificate at the postsecondary level or an associate orbaccalaureate degree.
Each school receiving Perkins funds under the Act isrequired to offer the relevant courses of Program of Study. Programs of Studyare similar to PA initiatives such as Tech Prep, career pathways, careeracademics, and career clusters.

ALLIED HEALTH TECHNOLOGY 1, 2, 3

Length of Course: This is a three year technical course beginning in grade 10 andavailable to all students. This is aTech Prep Program - recommending two years of postsecondary education.
This course may be utilized as a three credit elective forthose pursuing careers in the medical field. This course is also recommended for those who wish to pursue a career innursing. This course is a clusterapproach addressing the variety of specialized technical health-relatedcareers. The initial phase of curriculumprovides students with the knowledge and skills to work as a homecare/personalcare assistant. Students in all levels receive clinical as well as communityservice experience. The remainder of the program has been designed to acquaintstudents with a variety of allied health careers. This course provides students with skilldevelopment in health occupations, so that they make informed career decisionsprior to enrolling in a post secondary program. Clinical settings include long-term and Personal Care FacilitiesProgram. Students also receive acute care exposure through the UPMC HealthAwareness Apprenticeship. This apprenticeship is intended for the 2nd and 3rdyear juniors and seniors. Some first year upper-class students may beconsidered for participation in the Apprenticeship. Allied Health Technologistsmay find work as Sonographers, Medical Assistants, Medical Lab Technicians,Nuclear Medicine Technicians, Occupational Therapy Assistants, PharmacyTechnicians, Physical Therapy Assistants, Radiation Therapy Technologist,Radiology Technicians, Respiratory Therapists, and Surgical Technicians.
Recommended Entrance Requirements: The student must understand basic math andscience concepts, be able to communicate verbally and in writing, and be ingood health. Students are required topurchase and wear a designated uniform and specified white duty shoes.

COLLISION REPAIR 1, 2, 3

Length of Course: This is a three year technical course beginning in grade 10 andavailable to all students.
At McKeesport Area Tech Center, you can prepare for aprofitable career in automotive collision repair. Our program instructsstudents in the latest techniques and practices within the industry. Studentsstudy all phases of auto collision repair. Their skills are put to the testwhen working on school owned and actual customer vehicles. Students also learnto estimate cost of repair and how to manage an auto body shop.
Recommended entrance requirements: Interested studentsshould possess manual dexterity, mechanical thinking skills, physical strengthand stamina, the ability to pay attention to detail and complete projectsaccurately.
As a student, you will learn: surface preparation, painting,panel patching and shaping, surface damage repair, frame straightening,alignment procedures, glass installation, cost estimating, auto detailing, andmig welding.
Other course offerings: professional development/work ethic,job seeking techniques, NOCTI Skills testing, cooperative education, ASECertification in painting and refinishing.
Career direction: Graduates of the Auto Body program areprepared for entry-level employment or may choose to further theiremployability with post graduate training.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY 1, 2, 3

Length of Course: This is a three year technical course beginning in grade 10 andavailable to all students.
The Automotive Technology course provides the student withpractical instruction in the diagnosis, repair, and adjustment of theautomobile in 4 ASE areas. The studentswill be given the opportunity to apply their knowledge in the repair ofautomobiles. The instructions cover the complete range of work on: electricaland electronic systems - diagnosis and repair; brakes - theory and diagnosis ofABS related problems; suspension and steering - diagnosis and repair of drivetrain, front axle, front wheel drive suspension systems, front-end alignments,steering mechanisms; engine performance - diagnosis and repair, including fuelinjection, electronic and standard ignition systems, all computer controlcircuits, troubleshooting, motor tune-up, emission controls.
Recommended Entrance Requirements: The student should have mathematics andmechanical aptitude and the understanding of basic mechanical principals,dexterity with tools, a physical ability to handle automotive equipment, and anability to meet and talk with the general public.
Shop Safety: Correctand safe practices will be enforced always. All students are required to have proper work shoes. Students arerequired to purchase a uniform.
Employment opportunities are available in the followingareas: automotive service stations, parts and accessory establishments, cardealerships (new and used), specialty repair shops, corporations, heavyeqeuipment repair, trucking industry, small engine repair, and marine tech.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY 1, 2, 3

Length of Course: This is a three year technical course beginning in grade 10 andavailable to all students.
Instruction is provided in basic entry level skills ofcarpentry, masonry, plumbing, steel framing, heating, electrical, painting anddecorating, and a variety of activities associated with building construction.These include, but are not limited to cost estimating, cutting, fitting,fastening, and finishing various materials, the use of a variety of hand tools,blueprint reading and following technical specifications. Students in thisclass participate in building a modular home on-site. Upon completion of thisprogram, students are eligible to apply for the Building Trades ApprenticeshipProgram. This course may be considered as an elective for those interested inarchitecture, engineering, and design.
Recommended Entrance Requirements: The students should have some mechanicalaptitude, an understanding of basic mechanical principles, dexterity withtools, a physical ability to handle construction equipment, and an ability tomeet and talk with the general public. Students must purchase leather boots andhave appropriate work clothes.
Shop Safety: Correctand safe practices will be enforced at all times. All students will be required to have properwork shoes. All students are required to purchase a uniform.
Employment opportunities are available in the followingareas: schools, apartment house establishments, housing developments, hardwarestores, factories/corporations/PA Carpenter's Union, hospitals, colleges anduniversities, general construction, equipment sales firms, lumber yardcompanies, entrepreneurship.
CHILD CARE 1, 2, 3
Program of Study

Length of Course: This is a three year technical course beginning in grade 10 andavailable to all students.
This course is designed to prepare students for a careerworking with children at various levels and interests. Theory studies focus on basic childdevelopment and parenting skills. Learning experiences also include instruction in the areas of childhealth and nutrition, infant-toddler care, preschool, school-age care, specialneeds children, and child care administration. Practical experience is provided both on and off site. Students willalso be given the opportunity to visit other facilities that care for childrenin various capacities. Eligible students may benefit through a collaborationwith CCAC by earning six college credits if a career in early childhoodeducation is pursued. Students will work towards the CDA (Child DevelopmentAssociate) credential.
Recommended Entrance Requirements: Students choosing child care should be ingood health and well groomed. Studentsmust be mature, responsible, practice patience, and have a serious interest inworking with children of all ages.
It is strongly recommended that students enroll in the childdevelopment courses offered through the Family and Consumer Sciences departmentbefore graduation.
Shop Safety: Correctand safe practices will be enforced. Students will be required to wear smocks and practice safety standardsas set forth by the Department of Public Welfare.
Employment opportunities are available in the followingareas: day care aide, preschool techer, elementary teacher, Head Start teacher,nanny, parent educator, licensing specialist, recreation director, toydesigner/sales, children's clothing/furniture, designer/sales, authorchildren's book, foster parent, art instructor, school supply sales,babysitter.
COSMETOLOGY TECHNOLOGY 1, 2, 3

Length of Course: Three year technical program.
Career Objective: Cosmetologist, Barber Stylist, SkincareSpecialist, Nail Technician.
Prerequisites: Students must be well-groomed, have a senseof form, have a sense of artistry and willingness to follow instruction, andhave an above average degree of manual dexterity. Furthermore, participantsmust purchase a cosmetology tool kit/uniform and provide a social securitynumber for documenting their attendance to the state.
The program meets the state requirements for those studentsgraduating after three school terms of training. Basic information is providedin areas of hair care, skin care, nail care, and professional practices whichlead to licensure by the State Board of Cosmetology. Students may enter thecareer immediately upon graduation, or for those wishing to own or manage abusiness, he or she may articulate and transfer credits to earn an associatedegree in specialized technology at the following institutions: Douglass CareerCenter, Empire Beauty Academy, California University of Pennsylvania,Commmunity College of Allegheny County - 22 credits advanced standing withlicense.
Students in this program participate in both theory andpractical workshops daily. Studies include shampooing, rinses, haircutting,clipper cutting, styling, braids, thermal styling, permanent waving, relaxers,haircolor, artificial hair, highlighting, facials and skincare, hair removal,brow shaping, manicuring and nail design. Theory studies include: state laws,bacteriology and sanitation, salesmanship, professional ethics, salonmathematics, and preparation (including the application process).
Employment opportunities are available in the followingareas: salon stylist/manicuring salons, skin care salons, nail technician,beauty supply sale firms, beauty publication, beauty laboratories, day spatechnician, theater and television, fashion design establishment, massagetherapy, private school owner/teacher, cosmetic chemist, salon owner, wig andextension specialist, makeup consultant, barber stylist, wedding/fashion hairdesigner, hair braider/natural and artificial.
Students entering the program are required to purchase atool kit and uniform. Payments for the kit/uniform are handled by the MATCoffice. All kits/uniforms must be paid in full by the end of the first semesterof enrollment. Failure to pay will warrant removal from the program.
CULINARY ARTS 1, 2, 3

Length of Course: This is a three year technical course beginning in 10th grade andavailable to all students.
This course instructs students in the skills necessary tocontinue their education in a chef apprentice program in partnership with postsecondary colleges. This class preapres students in all facets of employmentrelated to institutional and commercial food services. Specialized learningexperiences include: prep work, pantry, baking, grill, line work, and grandemanager. Theory is offered in safety, sanitation, utensils, equipment usage,and food science. Training is provided to persons desiring to become employedin all entry level areas of the food service industry. Additional experiencesmay include job shadowing, event catering, evening and weekend workexperiences.
Recommended Entrance Requirements: The student should have good general health,a mature attitude, and an interest in preparing and serving food. Basic people skills are required and a desireto work with the public is essential. The student should have strong basic mathskills and communication skills.
Dress Requirements: Uniforms and rubber-soled shoes are necessary for this shop. Uniformsare ordered through the school and paid for by the parents.
Shop Safety: Correct safety and sanitary practices areenforced. The Pennsylvania Department of Health and United States Food ServiceDepartment requires students to wear uniforms, hair nets or cooks hats andproper work shoes (rubber sole) when in the commercial kitchen. No open shoes,gloves must be worn when handling food. (Excessive jewelry, artificial nails,nail polish, and excessively baggy clothes are not permitted in commercial foodservice establishments.)

**ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY 1

Engineering Technology is a two year Tech-Prep programoffered as part of an articulation between MAHS and Community College of AlleghenyCounty. This course also qualifies forcollege credit through the California University of Pa Applied RoboticsTechnology 2+2+2 option. Engineering Technology is open to students enteringtheir junior year who qualify by meeting established requirements and whosuccessfully complete the selection process. Entrance into this program iscompetitive and enrollment is limited. Engineering Technology 1 is centered onthe basic concepts related to engineering and design. Hands-on, minds-onlearning will occur in the areas of electricity, manufacturing/productionconcepts, computer programming and applications, problem solving, aerodynamics,design and structures. Essential requirements for the workplace such as healthand safety, industry standards, specifications, and readiness skills will becovered. This course is the first step in a four year program that could leadto an associate degree as an engineering technician, or full Bachelor's degreein engineering. This is an excellent way to gain entrance to a top rankeduniversity while studying for an excellent career. Robotics is the keyorganizer for this course.
VEX Robotics is a featured part of this curriculum andparticipation at competition is required.
**Successful completion of this course qualifies for threecollege credits under the 2+2+2 Agile Robotics Tech Prep agreement withCalifornia University of Pennsylvania. A final average of 80% in this course isrequired to qualify. This course will require advanced levels of work anddedication.
**ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY 2

Engineering Technology 2 builds on concepts taught inEngineering Technology 1. Hands-on, minds-on, learning will occur in the areasof safety, robotics, structures, Computer Automated Machining (CAM), electricalconcepts, 3D solid modeling, problem solving, aerodynamics and materials.Partnerships with industry provide the opportunity for "real-life"situations and experiences outside the classroom. Essential requirements forthe workplace such as health and safety, standards, specifications, and jobreadiness skills will be covered. Computer numerical control machines and RobotC related to autojation will be featured. Robotics is the key organizer forthis course.
VEX Robotics is a featured part of this curriculum andparticipation at competition is required.
**Successful completion of this course qualifies for threecollege credits under the 2+2+2 Agile Robotics Tech Prep agreement withCalifornia University of Pennsylvania. A final average of 80% in this course isrequired to qualify. This course will require advanced levels of work anddedication.
Tech-Prep Requirements:
To qualify, a student must have earned a 70% grade pointaverage or above in the following subjects: MATH - Algebra 1 or Plane Geometry;SCIENCE - Physical Science or Biology 1 or Applied Biology; TECHNOLOGY -Computer Fundamentals or CADD; ENGLISH - two full credits.
2+2+2 Agile Robotics Option
In order to receive these credits and have them posted onthe college transcript; the student must apply and be admitted to CaliforniaUniversity and they must successfully complete a three credit University level courseat California University with a grade of C or better within two years ofcompleting the program at the McKeesport Area Technology Center. During theapplication process, McKeesport students must submitt their CaliforniaUniversity admission application complete with all required components: (1) arecommendation from the McKeesport Area Technology Center Engineering teacher,(2) a signed letter of intent.
ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDIES

Entrepreneurial Studies is a three year Tech-Prep programthat prepares students to perform development, marketing, and managementfunctions associated with owning, operating, and maintaining a business.Students receive in-depth instruction in entrepreneurship, accounting,management concepts, business economics, business law, marketing concepts,entrepreneurial finance, business ethics, communications, and human relations.Instruction includes training in the areas of products/services, location,business layout, pricing, promotion, financial records, competition, profit,risk management, customer service, decision-making, leadership, technologyapplications, and business plan development.
Students completing this program may develop and operate asmall business including home-based and e-commerce; or, continue on topost-secondary education in the following areas: Accounting, BusinessAdministration, Entrepreneurship, or Marketing/Management.
This program offers opportunities to obtain industrycertifications in Accounting, Entrepreneurship, and Microsoft Office.
Students may also compete in the NFTE Business PlanCompetition and are encouraged to join associated organizations: FutureBusiness Leaders of America (FBLA), Skills USA, or The Future is Mine (TFIM).
If a student wishes to participate in EntrepreneurialStudies, he or she must take the following courses: Accounting I, AccountingII, Business Communications and Leadership, Business Law and Ethics, BusinessMarketing and Management, Business Math and Eonomics, Business Technology,Entrepreneurship I, and Entrepreneurship II.
ACCOUNTING I

BUSINESS LAW AND ETHICS

Students gain an understanding of the law as it relates tothem currently and the implications of the law in their future lives as well asthe lives of their family and friends. They also work to gain an understandingof basic legal vocabulary. The course includes an understanding of the courtsystem at the local, state, and national level. Students gain an understandingof contract law, their rights and responsibilities as citizens, utilizations offinancial transactions, employment and agency relationships, and theunderstanding of the regulations governing different types of businessorganizations. This class will also include a nine week section of ethics. Thiscourse is required for Entrepreneurial Studies.

GRAPHICS/COMMERICAL ART 1, 2,

Length of Course: This is a three year technical course beginning in grade 10 andavailable to all students.
This course provides basic information and skills gearedtowards a career in the field. The following jobs are introduced: graphicdesign, advertising, illustration, digital photography, sign making andprinting. Instruction includes: researching, planning, creative thinking,sketching, drawing, layout and design, problem solving, manipulatingphotographs, printing, finishing and computer design. Assignments students willcreate are: logos, illustrations, flyers, T-shirt designs, business cards,brochures, signs, posters, greeting advertising cards, and photographs.Students also be operate the latest high tech equipment - computers, scanners,digital cameras, printers, and poster-making equipment.
Interested Recommended Entrance Requirements: MUST HAVE TAKEN BASIC ART OR DRAWING. Itwould be beneficial to the students to have artistic abilities. The student must be motivated to perform witha high degree of proficiency and patience. Technical math and the ability to follow written and verbal instructionsare necessary. Courses in typing andbasic computer usage or computer fundamentals are highly recommended.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Co-op program offers three credits to technical studentswhere they "cap off" their technical training with a related paidwork experience at a school-approved business. Students complete their academicclasses in the morning then travel to the work site. The student must adhere toall company policies and perform their duties in a loyal manner. Periodicevaluations of job progress are made by an experienced supervisor who mentorsthe student to give them an understanding of job skills and responsibilities.Many of these positions lead to full time employment after graduation. Thestudents must also attend regular classes where additional occupationaltraining is provided by the coordinator.
DIVERSIFIED OCCUPATIONS
The diversified occupation program is a work-based learningprogram that is designed for 11th and 12th grade students to provide trainingin career areas not offered at MASD and serve students who are consideredat-risk because of financial, domestic, and/or academic problems. Students mayearn 1-1/2 credits per semester. They must adhere to all company policies.Students must attend regular classes where addtiionial occupational training isprovided by the coordinator.
Students must read and complete the program application, andhave it signed by their parents, employer and themselves before handing it tothe School to Work Coordinator (Mr. Tomaino) within ten days of the start ofthe semester to receive credit.
Furthermore, students must make sure that:
• theyhave scheduled and completed an interview with the School to Work coordinator(Mr. Tomaino) for admission into the program.
• theyhave completed and returned a cover letter and resume with their applicationform.
General Guidelines for the Program:
• Studentsmust be employed by a business, organization, or individual that pays workmen'scompensation, deducts taxes, Social Security, and pays at least minimum wage.
• StudentsMUST work a minimum of 15 hours per week with at least 10 of those hours beingscheduled Monday through Friday. Additionally, in order for the students toobtain release time from regularly assigned afternoon classes, the studentsmust begin work by 1:00 p.m. and a minimum of three days of the week. Toreceive full credit for the work experience, students are required to beemployed 150 of the 180 school days each year.
• Employersmust abide by all state and federal laws and regulations as to the amount ofhours per week, overtime benefits, and other work related activities as theyapply to "student-learners." Employers must be willing to follow theguidelines of the program concerning the completion of all program forms.
• Itis the student's responsibility to obtain employment prior to the beginning ofthe semester. It is also the student's responsibility to maintain employmentthroughout the year. However, the school does reserve the right to reject astudent's place of employment when deemed as an inappropriate work situation.The school acts NOT as an employment agency, but will ASSIST when possible inregard to job placement. The student without an approved job by the beginningof the semester MUST contact the School to Work Coordinator in person.Otherwise, the student will be dropped from the program and rescheduled forregular classes.
• Whenadmitted to the program, the student is also enrolled in the classroom portionof diversified occupations. Classroom requirements include the keeping of anotebook, as well as completing all forms, procedures, and assignments asinstructed by the teacher/coordinator (Mr. Tomaino). Two grades are given forthis program. One grade is for the classroom and one is for the work portion ofthe program.
• Programparticipants may take part in extracurricular activities when such activitydoes not interfere with their work schedule and provided all otherschool-related commitments can be met.
• Thestudent will apply immediately for a work permit if under 18 years of age.
• Studentsmust provide their own transportation for this release schedule.
• Studentsare expected to leave the school at the conclusion of their assigned classesand refrain from loitering in the school halls.
• Ifthe student decides to change his or her job, he or she must first discuss itwith the diversified occupations coordinator for approval failure to do so willresult in removal from the diversified occupations program.
• Ifthe student is terminated (fired) from their job, they must inform thediversified occupations coordinator immediately.
• StudentsWILL NOT go to work on days when they are ABSENT from school.
• Studentswill stay on task in their classes and complete all of their class worksatisfactorily. Failing grades in any of the major subject areas for graduationcan result in removal from the program.
• Allstudents will maintain good attendance throughout the program. Failure to do socan result in removal from the program.
• Studentsrealize that they are under the jurisdiction of the school throughout the day.Release time is school time.
• Studentswill avoid activities that would lead to detention, suspension, or explusion.The diversified occupations student is regarded in the SAME manner as any otherstudent at McKeesport Area High School. Detention must be served after school,following all school regulations. Students assigned ISR are to be ISR for theentire day.
