Math
McKeesport Area School District strives to provide students with a comprehensive education. At the elementary level, mathematics instruction is comprised of the following, for a total of 80 minutes per day:
Kindergarten & 1st Grade
Number Corner
- Daily Time: 10-15 minutes every day
- Learning Goals: Review the date and months/days; Collect blocks/ shapes/money to make graphs; Make observations and predictions; Practice counting
- Instructional Purpose: Spiral and pre-teach on measurement, geometry, and data standards; Make observations and predictions
Number Sense and Fluency
- Daily Time: 10-15 minutes every day
- Learning Goals: Recognize numbers and number patterns; Build Number sense to support grade level skills
- Instructional Purpose: Develop number sense based on Early Numeracy Trajectory; Provide visual models for developing number sense and computational fluency; Building fact and procedural fluency
HMH Into Math
- Daily Time: 40-50 minutes every day whole group instruction
- Learning Goals: Introduce grade level skills
- Instructional Purpose: Use manipulatives to model math and make sense of standards algorithms; Make sense of math in real world situations with 3 read strategy
- Daily Time: 2-3 times per week; 20 minute Small Group intervention
- Learning Goals: Provide instruction on previous grade level skills to work towards mastery
- Instructional Purpose: Time for proactive and reactive data driven intervention to close gaps in student skills and prepare students to better understand core lessons
2nd Grade
Timed Fluency Practice
- Daily Time: 10-15 minutes every day
- Learning Goals: Build speed and accuracy when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with paper and pencil intervention
- Instructional Purpose: Review different strategies for operations; Practice and build accuracy with partner work; Record scores weekly to monitor growth and learning
Number Sense and Math Application Spiral
- Daily Time: 10-15 minutes every day
- Learning Goals: Recognize numbers and number patterns; Build Number sense to support grade level skills
- Instructional Purpose: Develop number sense based on Early Numeracy Trajectory; Provide visual models for developing number sense and computational fluency; Building fact and procedural fluency

3rd to 5th Grade
Spiral Review Slides & HMH Into Math
- Daily Time: 60 minutes every day (this time can also include small group)
- Learning Goals: Prepare students to learn grade level skills; Introduce grade level skills
- What we do: Spiral Review Slides; Use manipulatives (math materials) to model and represent math; Make sense of math in real world situations with 3 read strategy
Spring Math Intervention
- Daily Time: 15-20 minutes every day
- Learning Goals: Build speed and accuracy when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with paper and pencil intervention
- What we do: Review different strategies for operations; Practice and build accuracy with partner work; Record scores weekly to monitor growth and learning
Independent/Small Group Intervention Time (Can be incorporated into Core Time)
- Daily Time: 20 minutes every day
- Learning Goals: Use a variety of data sources to address the needs of students to provide instruction on previous grade level skills to work towards mastery
- What we do: Time for proactive and reactive data driven intervention to close gaps in student skills and prepare students to better understand core lessons
