1994 State Championship Football Team
The McKeesport Tigers won their first state championship in 1994, defeating District 1 champion Downingtown by a score of 17-14, an exclamation point on a undefeated season. The Tigers reached the Class 4A title game after beating Upper St. Clair in the WPIAL Championship by a score of 21-14.
The 1994 State Championship Football Team was inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame in 2017. The team, led by head coach George Smith, was honored for a masterful defense that shut out four opponents and allowed fewer than eight points per game. Among the stars of this historic Tiger team was Brandon Short, who went on to a star as a linebacker for Penn State and the New York Giants.
